Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act Amendments of 1987

Congress enacted  ANCSA, extinguishing aboriginal title claims in exchange for land and  monetary compensation managed through Alaska state-chartered regional and  village corporations.

This is the  foundation of the entire ANCSA corporate system; modern debates about  shareholder rights, transparency, participation, and accountability all trace  back to its design choices.
